Big Ten: From Campus to Court Side

by Griffin Krueger, Loyola Phoenix Sports Editor

Eight Loyola student journalists traveled to Brooklyn, New York to cover the Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Championships where the second-seeded Ramblers have a chance to punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament.

Loyola’s School of Communication sponsored the trip for students involved in the Loyola Phoenix student newspaper and the Rambler Sports Locker TV Program.

Members of Rambler Sports Locker — including Nate Keough, Sarah Mahaney, Amelia Vilhauer, Shreeya Pattekar, Vanesa Hoxha and Natalie King —  will be creating highlight packages, talking to fans, giving daily previews before the games kick off and attending post-game press conferences.

The students from The Phoenix — Griffin Krueger and Austin Hojdar — will write game recaps, take photos, attend post-game press conferences and post results on social media.

The tournament gives the students the chance to showcase the skills they have been honing covering the Ramblers in Gentile Arena all season and apply them to a professional media environment while working in an NBA arena.

Keough, Rambler Sports Locker’s executive producer, said he is excited about coming to New York and is thrilled to be bringing such an awesome team with him.

“We’re all gonna switch off between a lot of roles both in front of the camera and behind the camera,” he said. “It gives a great chance for everyone to show their technical skills and their reporting skills all at once and I'm very confident that everyone on this team can do that and with all the different reporting styles it'll make every package very different and unique.”

Hojdar, editor-in-chief of The Phoenix, said it has been awesome to visit the city for the first time and it’s a valuable experience for him especially since he’s doing it with friends he has worked with for a long time.

“Having the chance to see the men's basketball team in action on the stage that is so huge like the Barclays Center is crazy,” he said. “This is not something I would’ve imagined that I would have the chance to do in college.”
